Shallow Flats and Shell Pads Producing Heavy Limits
Matagorda Bay - Matagorda, TX
The bite in Matagorda has reached a fever pitch this week as a series of stable high-pressure days has cleared the water across the West Bay flats. Matagorda Guide Service has been on the water daily, finding aggressive schools of Redfish pushing bait against the windward shorelines. With water temperatures holding steady in the low 70s, the metabolic rate of these predators is high, leading to some of the most explosive surface strikes we’ve seen all season.
Top Hotspots & Tactics We are currently focusing our efforts on the Matagorda fishing hotspots near the Colorado River delta and the mid-bay shell reefs.
East Matagorda Bay: The "gator" Speckled Trout have moved onto the deeper shell pads. We are finding success using croaker and topwater plugs during the early morning hours before the sun gets too high.
West Matagorda Bay: The best Redfish fishing in Matagorda Bay is happening right now in the back-lake guts. Sight-casting with soft plastics in "fried chicken" or "plum" colors has been the ticket for pulling tournament-grade Reds out of the grass.
Current Conditions Water Clarity: Clear to slightly stained in the back lakes; emerald green near the jetties.
Tide: Incoming tides have been the most productive, specifically the two-hour window before the peak.
Wind: Light southeasterly winds (5-10 mph) are keeping the surf manageable and the bay waters pristine.
